Find them in the static

Something lives at every signal. NetCreature2 is a game about finding it, recovering it and earning its trust. Point the scanner at a web address and see who answers. Same address, same creature, every time.

  • In development
  • Windows first
  • Mobile planned

Rank: Volunteer. Pay: a stipend. Headcount: 1.

A glowing monitor in a dim bedroom. The screen reads: Will you join the NetCreature Recovery Corps? Will you stand against the Saturation? Below it are two buttons, YES and NO.
The first thing the game asks you.

What you will do

Scan. Recover. Coach.

  1. 01

    Scan

Give the scanner an address. It reads the text, never visits, and builds whatever lives there from the bytes. For now it reads web addresses. Other signals are planned.

  2. 02

    Recover

Some creatures come along quietly. Some want to test you. Some just want a fight. Win them over, then keep them or send them home. Either way, that address is closed for good.

  3. 03

    Coach

Fights run on a clock, and you do not fight. You coach: a move, and a tone of voice. Harsher is obeyed more, until your creature stops listening.

Inside the game

A bedroom, an arena, a camp

The game opens in a quiet bedroom at night. The room flickers between itself and its wireframe twin, and a monitor on the desk asks you a question.

A dim bedroom at night: a bed with a lava lamp glowing on the nightstand, a desk with an old computer, a window with curtains, and a ceiling fan outlined in cyan.
The room.
The same bedroom drawn as a cyan wireframe on black: the bed, desk, window, ceiling fan and nightstand as bare outlines.
Its wireframe twin.
Camp 7 at night: a street under an elevated road, a red NCRC Recovery Corps sign, a medic's green cross, neon signs for noodles and karaoke, burn barrels with fires, and round creature seals standing about. A caption reads: Forecast, static, clearing to more static.
Camp 7. Forecast: static, clearing to more static.
The arena on a city street at night. A blue water dog in the foreground faces a small orange fire dog. A red banner reads THE DOG BIT YOU. Along the bottom are the move cards and the six tones: Ask, Tell, Direct, Order, Yell, Scream.
The arena. This is the part where the dog bit us.

Between fights you go back to camp, where your roster lives, the medic patches up the wounded, and the quartermaster has what you need. There is a barrel with a fire in it. Everyone stands near it.

The Corps

Not a real military

The NetCreature Recovery Corps is a militia with ranks, ribbons and a quartermaster. Credit becomes rank, and rank becomes a bigger roster. There are eight ranks. We can show you two.

  1. Volunteer
  2. Redacted
  3. Redacted
  4. Redacted
  5. Redacted
  6. Redacted
  7. Redacted
  8. Commander

Elements

Seven elements, one colour each

Every creature has an element, and every element has its own mark, its own colour and its own way of hitting. Common has none. Common is fine.

The Saturation

The Saturation

A new kind of shade has fallen over our devices.
We call it the Saturation.

Will you join the NetCreature Recovery Corps? Will you stand against the Saturation?

In the game it arrives as grey static, sweeping over the camp and the arenas out in the wild. Cause: unknown. Cure: unknown. Weather: yes.

Footage

Two videos so far

Newest first. Both are the real game. Neither is finished, and both say so.

NetCreature2 is kind of a thing

The first footage: five minutes, a power ballad, and a running commentary on how unfinished everything is.

Status

Still being built

NetCreature2 is in active development, for Windows first, with mobile planned. There is no release date. It is coming whenever we feel like it, but probably still before Winds of Winter.

The Corps thanks you for your patience.
